The legendary Ford Mustang has been around for about 60 years and has continued to be a contender against other vehicles down through the years. Let's take a look at the different Mustang generations.

 

First-Generation Ford Mustang (1964.5-1973)

In 1964, the Ford brought out the Mustang in New York. With its sporty style and powerful engine, it was a hot ride from the start. It grabbed the attention of so many people that Ford outperformed in expectations, selling more than 400,000 in the first year.

Some of the more popular first-generation Mustangs include the Bullitt, Eleanor, Mach 1, Boss 302, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500.

When it gets to the second-generation Mustangs, it seems this line was more forgettable than others. Because of the energy crisis and stricter emissions standards, Ford drastically changed the look of the car, giving it an opera window and a vinyl top.

Some models that were more likable included special editions like the Mach 1 and King Cobra II.

Ford revived the Mustang with the introduction of the Fox Body generation for the 1979 model year. The moniker comes from Ford's Fox platform shared with the Fairmont, Granada, and other Blue Oval vehicles. Fans rejoiced as the Fox Body embraced modern styling with first-gen cues and more capable powertrains. Along the way, the "Vanilla Ice" 5.0 Mustang appears and is cemented into American culture. Other standouts include the highly collectible SVO edition with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the prized SVT Cobra and Cobra R. The Foxy Body Mustang enjoys support among collectors and tuners due to a plentiful and cheap supply and simple mechanics.

The fourth-edition Mustang has an updated Fox Body chassis that looks more like the original model. It hosts a 5.0-liter engine until 1996 when it's replaced with a 4.6-liter V-8 engine delivers 300 horsepower. Ford was able to improve the emissions and fuel economy so that they could plow ahead with the better engine.

The fifth-generation Mustang has a bold, muscular look. And for many Mustang shoppers, the S197 is a sweet spot. In 2011, Ford brings out the Modular 5.0 V-8 engine that delivers 412 horsepower Some popular choices for this generation include the Shelby GT500, a second Bullitt variant, and the Boss 302.

 

Sixth-Generation Ford Mustang (2015-present)

 

Ford is going in all the way to keep the Mustang popular. This generation offers a 3.7-liter V-6 that delivers 300 horsepower. Also, the turbo 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder delivers up to 335 horsepower.
